A few facts on Eczema...

Is it just me or are there more children that seem to be suffering from Eczema these days?  Eczema is one of those things, in my case anyway, that appeared one day out of the blue. Both our boys had it from about 6 months old, I remember it as being days filled with creams after creams, and trying to stop toddlers scratching. (Virtually impossible as anyone would know who had shared our experience). It was over this time that we started to look into alternative solutions other than prescriptions from the GP.

Like any mother I was worried about what we put onto the boys skin as well as what went into their mouths quite frankly. But I will admit it did take me a bit longer to come to the realisation that we needed to look at the use of all of the chemicals around the house.
Eczema is one of those things that always seemed to come and go. We did come to recognise triggers such as excess heat or cold, after a visit to the beach and sometimes we just had no clue WHY? The itching was dreadful and often lead to bleeding. After lots of research we decided to change our soaps and detergents we used. We exchanged all of our detergents, soaps and shampoos for a plant based alternative, and you guessed it the eczema all but disappeared.

So what is Eczema Exactly?

The Eczema Association of Australasia Inc define eczema as the following
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a recurring, non-infectious, inflammatory skin condition affecting one in three Australasians at some stage throughout their lives. The condition is most common in people with a family history of an atopic disorder, including asthma or hay fever.’

Symptoms Include:
  • Recurring rashes, generally starting as babies.
  • Mostly focused around elbows, inside elbows, backs of knees, neck or anywhere that may get a bit sweaty.
  • Dry itching skin which may lead to bleeding with excessive scratching.
  • Red patches that may become inflamed and can be at risk of infection.
All sounds rather hideous really, the worst being that no one really knows why it happens in some children and not others.

Fortunately we seemed to have beaten the eczema for the moment. (I always say never say never). But it was a journey that took a few years. I have to say I think we have trialled it all, and spent a small fortune in the process working out what works and what does not!
So my advice would be to be patient and work through all the possibilities and eventually you will find the answer that works for you.

Some Ideas that worked for us:
1. Avoid powders that can cause excoriation, especially in creases of the skin.
2. Always choose products which are soap and sulphate free.
3. Check what is in your laundry powders, shampoos etc babies skin is delicate.

I have attached a link which may help you out further from the Eczema Association of Australasia Inc.
